CASE STUDY

Improving the Nailsworth to Stroud Cycleway

Over 8,000 Tyres Recycled Into a Sustainable Surface

The Stroud Valleys Trail which extends from Nailsworth to Stroud was heavily worn in places and no longer fit for purpose.

DCS was appointed to install 7,750 sq.m of flexible porous paving along 3.5 km of the trail to transform this popular route for cyclists, walkers and horse riders.

The improvements to the trail, which forms part of National Cycle Route 45, were led by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust (GWT) and were funded by Gloucestershire County Council, Stroud District Council and the European Regional Development Fund.

Recycled and Sustainable

DCS installed the new surface using a flexible porous paving material formed using stone, recycled vehicle tyres and a polyurethane binder.

The new porous surface allows high volumes of water and air to flow through it. And although tough, it’s also flexible enough to allow a small amount of movement as temperature and environmental conditions change.

A simple stone sub-base is sufficient for flexible porous paving, keeping down costs as well as install times when compared to alternatives.

A Great Reception

Our specialist team at DCS worked with the local authorities to minimise disruption to the public throughout the installation of the trail’s new surface.

We were careful to minimise the impact to the surrounding area, erecting signs and using temporary work stations along the trail as we worked, keeping the trail accessible for the majority of the duration of the project.

The result has been very well received, making the trail once again accessible to everyone, from cyclists and horses to walkers with pushchairs.

And we received some very positive reactions from passing members of the public during the works. Thank you to all of you!
